The Ice Man finally cometh.
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Victor Lindelöf from Benfica. The 22-year-old Swedish defender has signed a a four-year contract from 1 July 2017, with an option for a further year. We don't know exactly how much the fee is, but everybody's guessing at around £30m, and we'll just go along with that.
Sometimes transfers just come out of nowhere, don't they? Yes? Well, this isn't one of them. This move has been bubbling along for well over six months now, and there are even suggestions that he might have joined in January, but for some mysterious hold-up involving his former club Västerås SK. We've mostly mentioned that because that little circle thing above the 'a' there looks cool.
Anyway, United have a player who is, by all accounts, a versatile, classy, and promising defender. Though he's able to play at right-back, we're guessing that he'll feature centrally for the most part, in partnership with Eric Bailly or in a three with Bailly and Marcos Rojo. Most importantly, everybody seems to agree that he can pass out from the back. That'll be nice.
Most excitingly, United now have a player nicknamed "The Ice Man". It's an upgrade from "Youngy", and no mistake.
United’s new defender said, “I'm thrilled to join United. I'm keen to get started and contribute to the team's efforts to win more trophies.”
